Community Kitchen

Community Kitchen

The Food Bank's Community Kitchen began as a pilot program in 2000. Now, through an innovative partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, NTFB's Community Kitchen is able to produce some 7,500 meals each week for North Texas homeless shelters and soup kitchens.

Community Kitchen
The mission of the kitchen is to offer nutritious, fully-prepared frozen meals for our Partner Agencies, while also providing culinary training to individuals from the Texas Second Chance program. A 3,000 square-foot kitchen at NTFB gives trainees on-the-job experience, while helping to prepare meals for 39 Partner Agencies.

Texas Second Chance
In 1997, NTFB formed a collaborative partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Texas Second Chance allows selected prison confinees to donate time and volunteer at NTFB up to five days a week. As volunteer laborers, they receive job-skills training in warehousing and food service that prepares them to successfully reintegrate into the community. In 2014, participants in the Texas Second Chance program provided more than 22,500 hours of community service to NTFB.
