LOCAL AREA CHARITIES WIN BIG
THROUGH SOUPER BOWL OF CARING
Over 569,000 Pounds of Food and $196,500 Collected So Far

 

DALLAS/FORT WORTH –More than 3,340 youth and 280 schools, churches and organizations around the Metroplex have participated in this year’s Souper Bowl of Caring and conducted their own food drives since the January 15th Kick Off. So far, over 569,000 pounds of food and $196,500 have been raised with donations still being reported.

Community leaders Albertsons, Kroger Food Stores and Tom Thumb Food & Pharmacy, local media outlets—NBC 5; CBS 11; TXA 21; Telemundo Dallas; WFAA; 100.3 JACK FM, 98.7 FM KLUV, KRLD 1080 AM, 103.7 LITE FM, The Dallas Morning News and Star-Telegram with support from the Dallas Cowboys have lead the Souper Bowl of Caring Dallas/Fort Worth efforts to tackle hunger in North Texas.

All of the food and cash collected goes to non-profits in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with the bulk of the proceeds benefitting the North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank. Together, they serve 25 counties and over 550 hunger-relief agencies in North Texas.

Souper Bowl of Caring collections around North Texas have included Parkview Elementary reporting 1,664 in food donations, Manara Academy in Coppell raising $2,098 and Aldersgate First United Methodist Church in Carrollton collecting 341 cans and $1,520 through a silent auction for hand-painted “Souper Bowls”.

“Souper Bowl of Caring demonstrates the power of working together,” said Ron Goch, Executive Director of Souper Bowl of Caring. “Thanks to all the dedicated players on this incredible team that is transforming Super Bowl weekend into a time of caring for others.”

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national youth-led movement of schools, congregations, community organizations and compassionate individuals joining together to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities, transforming the nation’s biggest weekend of football into its largest weekend of giving and serving. About the Tarrant Area Food Bank
Founded in 1982 as a nonprofit clearinghouse for donated food, Tarrant Area Food Bank is the primary source of food for 300 major hunger-relief programs in Fort Worth and the surrounding 13 counties of Tarrant, Denton, Johnson, Hood, Parker, Cooke, Bosque, Erath, Hamilton, Hill, Palo Pinto, Somervell and Wise. Each month, this network of nonprofit pantries, senior citizen centers, shelters, after-school programs and other social services centers distributes emergency groceries to more than 40,000 families and serves 625,00 meals and snacks on agency sites. During the past year (2009), the number of families served by pantries increased 25 percent. One third of the individuals served by the Tarrant Area Food Bank network are children. As a certified member of the national Feeding American network of regional food banks, Tarrant Area Food Bank adheres to strict standards for food handling, warehouse management and financial responsibility.
