Nick Jonas Visits the North Texas Food Bank

On Jan. 2, 2010, The North Texas Food Bank welcomed pop singer Nick Jonas to our 72,000-square-foot warehouse to take a tour with our President and CEO Jan Pruitt, volunteer on our Food 4 Kids line, and attend a class on healthy eating taught by Nutrition Manager Katherine Lindholm. The excitement continued as cameras from NBC’s The Biggest Loser captured Nick’s volunteerism and comments on healthy eating and his personal struggle with diabetes for a program to air in early February.

"If there's something I can do to help – volunteer here today or giving a financial gift – that's something I can do," the 17-year-old told Dallas Morning News reporter Diane Jennings. In fact, Nick surprised the NTFB staff by donating $25,000 from the Jonas Brothers Foundation, giving the Food Bank enough for 100,000 meals to feed the tens of thousands of families we serve each month.

President and CEO Jan Pruitt said she believes Jonas’ visit inspired not only the 140 volunteers from Chase and Kroger who were on hand, but his advocacy for the Food Bank will reach young, budding philanthropists around the nation and hopefully inspire them to give back, too.

“We were so excited to have Nick on hand Saturday morning (probably no more so than my granddaughter was). Volunteers, like Nick and our partners at Chase and Kroger, are vital to the work that we do here and we couldn’t be prouder to have the lights and cameras of a national star focused on us because of his desire to do a good deed. Hunger touches all people in all walks of life, and we really can’t say enough to thank him for getting the word out.”
