Kids Cafe

The Kids Cafe program began in 1998 as a way to provide nutritious hot meals to children in after school programs. Targeted program locations  serve children who are at risk of hunger and/or food insecurity. Partnered with the Texas Department of Agriculture and their Child and Adult Care Feeding Program (CACFP), NTFB is able to significantly expand programming and provide healthier meals.  Kids Cafe operates throughout the school year serving 27 after schools sites. The children enjoy well-balanced meals developed and prepared by our Community Kitchen Chef and approved by the Food Bank’s Nutrition Team. The kids’ meals include a variety of vegetables, fruits, meats, whole grains and milk daily, which follow USDA guidelines.

Summer Feeding Program

During the summer months, most Kids Cafe sites continue service and participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), where the kids are served a hot meal for lunch and a healthy snack in the afternoon. With summer being the hungriest time of year, this program is vital to North Texas children.  Along with the SFSP program, summer sites also distribute backpacks on Friday full of kid-friendly non-perishable items, which provides two-thirds of their nutritional needs over the weekend. Please see the Food 4 Kids page for more details about the backpack program.
