Close the Gap Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Close the Gap?
Close the Gap is the North Texas Food Bank’s 3-year strategic plan to unite the community to narrow the food gap by providing access to 50 million meals annually.

What is the mission of the North Texas Food Bank?
The mission is to passionately pursue a hunger-free community by distributing food through a network of 917 feeding and education programs in 13 counties. Recognized for its efficiencies, every $1 donated to the Food Bank provides five meals, and 97 cents out of each donated dollar goes directly towards food distribution.

What is the food gap?
The current need is over 1 billion pounds of food, equivalent to 800 million meals. The gap between what people in poverty need and what they currently access is 29 million meals.

Who benefits from Close the Gap?
Ultimately, the hungry person benefits from this initiative. However, a hunger-free community strengthens all sectors of society. Our Member Agencies serve children, seniors, families, the homeless and the working poor.

How does the Food Bank plan to close the gap?
The North Texas Food Bank will close the gap through two key initiatives – increasing distribution and expanding the Food Stamp Outreach program. Agency infrastructure will be strengthened, underserved areas will receive additional support, and more nutritious product will be available.

Is this plan achievable?
Yes, with the help of the community – individuals, families, corporations, foundations, students, our Board and staff – this initiative will make a significant impact in the lives of hundreds of thousands of hungry families.

How can I get involved and help close the gap on hunger?
The North Texas Food Bank offers four key ways to get involved:

  • Give your voice- Tell your elected federal officials that you support federal programs that feed families. These include Food Stamps, Women Infants and Children (WIC), Head Start, Free and Reduced Breakfast and School Lunch, Summer Meals and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). Tell your elected state officials that you want people and families who need these programs to have easier access to them.

  • Give your time- Volunteer at the North Texas Food Bank’s warehouse sorting and boxing food, preparing meals in the Community Kitchen, or distributing food at a Food for Families site. Help our Member Agencies by volunteering at their location.

  • Give your dollar- Everyone deserves a place at the table. For every $1 donated, we distribute five meals.
